Crochet or knitting: what is the difference?

One crochet hook or two needles, one loop at a time or a whole row: what separates the two techniques, how to recognise them, and why everything is crocheted at Lunéa.

The handmade keyrings AUTOMNE: pumpkins, mushroom and ghost

I am often asked if I knit. The answer is no: at Lunéa, everything is crocheted, without exception. The two techniques transform a yarn into fabric, but they are not worked in the same way at all, and the result does not resemble each other.

A crochet against two needles

Knitting is done with two needles. All the stitches of a row remain mounted on one of them, and they are passed one by one to the other. If a stitch slips, it can run over several rows.

Crochet is done with a single tool, a small rod ended by a crochet. Only one loop is worked at a time: it remains on the crochet, and each new stitch comes to hang on the previous one. When you put your work down, there is only one loop to watch, and nothing runs.

What it changes for a piece

Knitting gives a supple and elastic fabric, which falls well: it is the technique of jumpers and ribbed hats.

Crochet gives a denser stitch, which holds its shape. This is what allows for building volumes: a nicely rounded pumpkin, a small Ghost, a UFO that keeps its shape once stuffed. This is also what gives their hold to the ruffles of a scrunchie or the petals of a flower.

These small crocheted and stuffed shapes even have a name: the amigurumis, a Japanese word. The charms of the shop are: the pumpkins and the Ghost of AUTOMNE, the small UFOs NOVA or the fruits of CLÉMENTINE.

Recognising them at a glance

Look at a stitch closely.

  • Knitting draws small V shapes aligned in columns, well regulated, like on a jumper.
  • Crochet draws relief stitches, closer together, which resemble small knots or small posts depending on the stitch.

On a very good view of this relief on a headband like ALBA or a scrunchie like ANTHÉA: it is what creates the texture of the piece.

Why everything is crochet at Lunéa

Because crochet lends itself to small pieces and shapes. A flower like FLORE, a fruit, a pumpkin: these are objects that are built stitch by stitch, almost like modelling. Crochet also allows pieces to be made one by one, in small quantities, without a machine.

One loop at a time, and a piece that is built stitch by stitch.

Each piece in the shop is handmade crochet, in the south of France. If a shape or colour is missing, I can study a custom request.

Frequently asked questions

Is crochet easier than knitting?

Many people find crochet easier to start with: one tool, one loop to follow, and a mistake can be undone without risking losing a whole row. Knitting requires keeping all the stitches of a row on the needle.

Can you crochet with knitting yarn?

Yes, most yarns can be crocheted as they are knitted. You just need to choose a crochet hook suitable for the thickness of the yarn: the recommended size is often indicated on the ball label.

What is an amigurumi?

A small crocheted figurine then stuffed, like the pumpkins of AUTOMNE or the ufos NOVA. The word comes from Japanese.
