Hair scrunchie: does it damage less than a hairband?

Hair scrunchie or fine hairband: which one damages less? What really makes the difference, how to wear it properly, and how I crochet mine.

ANTHÉA, scrunchie with ruffles handmade crochet, worn in the hair

The hair scrunchie has a reputation: it would damage hair less than a classic elastic band. This is true in most cases, and the reason lies in one simple thing, the way pressure is distributed on the hair.

Here is what really makes the difference between the two, what matters even more than the accessory, and how to wear a scrunchie to spare your hair.

Scrunchie or elastic band: which one damages hair the least?

A thin elastic band grips the hair on a very small surface. All the tension is concentrated on a narrow line, and it is often at this point that we find a mark, or a few broken hairs, when we remove it.

A scrunchie is an elastic band wrapped in a wider material: fabric, satin, or crochet yarn for mine. The hair no longer comes into direct contact with the elastic band. It is held by a thicker and more flexible surface, and the pressure is distributed.

There is a second difference, more discreet. Some elastic bands have a small hard joint, sometimes made of metal, where the two ends meet. This is a point where hair can get caught. In a scrunchie, the elastic band is hidden inside, and nothing protrudes.

With equal tightening, the scrunchie is therefore gentler on hair. But the tightening is just as important as the accessory.

What really damages hair: the way you tie it up

A scrunchie wrapped in three very tight turns also tires hair. A few habits weigh more heavily than the choice between scrunchie and elastic band:

  • Be gentle enough. The hair tie should hold, not pull on the scalp. If you feel discomfort after an hour, it is too tight.
  • Change the position. Attaching your hair in the same spot always stresses the same strands. Alternating between a high ponytail, low ponytail and bun distributes the effort.
  • Wait for your hair to be dry. When wet, hair is more fragile. Tying it up tightly at that moment is asking a lot from it.
  • Loosen for the night. We move while sleeping, our head rubs against the pillow. If you tie your hair for sleeping, a loose braid or a barely tight scrunchie is enough.
  • Remove gently. We slide the scrunchie along the ponytail rather than pulling it off in one go.
The scrunchie distributes the pressure. The rest depends on the hand that ties it.

Which scrunchie to choose according to your hair ?

Not all scrunchies have the same feel in the hair, and it is mainly the material that changes.

Satin and silk are very smooth. They slip over hair, and it is for this reason that they are often recommended for fine or fragile hair.

The fabric and the crochet yarn have more texture. They slip less, so the scrunchie moves less once in place. A crochet scrunchie also has another quality: it is visible. It decorates the hairstyle as much as it holds it.

For the size, common sense is enough. On fine hair, we avoid chaining rounds to compensate. On thick hair, a scrunchie that holds in two rounds is less tiring than a small design that is tightened to the maximum.

How I crochet my scrunchies

I have two of them in the boutique, and they are made in the same way: a black elastic inside the piece, and all around, 100% acrylic yarn certified OEKO-TEX®. It is the yarn that is in contact with the hair, not the elastic.

ANTHÉA comes from the Greek anthos, the flower. I was looking for a scrunchie that decorates the hair instead of just holding it, and I could not find it in shops. I eventually found this way to crochet it, with its flounces. Voir ANTHÉA, the flounced scrunchie.

IRIS is simpler, on purpose. Two shades that alternate in stripes, and nothing more: it is the colour that makes the accessory. Voir IRIS, the striped scrunchie.

Both are in the hair accessories section, with the headbands and clips.

How to care for a handmade crochet scrunchie

A scrunchie is worn every day, it eventually needs a wash. For mine:

  • wash by hand, at 30 °C maximum;
  • do not rub or wring: gently press it in a towel;
  • dry flat, in the open air;
  • no machine, no tumble dryer, no bleach: the elastic would not recover;
  • no ironing, acrylic fears heat.

It is the elastic that sets the rules. The yarn would withstand more, but an elastic that has been through a machine quickly loses its grip.

And when you do not want to tie anything?

The safest way to not tire your hair is still not to tie it every day. There are other ways to clear your face.

I use clips every day. They just clear the front, without tying everything. Mine are called CAMÉLIA, flower clips, small, and you can change them like you change your mood.

The headband holds the hair back without any elastic. My ALBA, cotton headband also exists in mercerised cotton, under the name of CLÉO.

If you have a precise idea in mind, a colour or a combination, the custom project page is for that.

Questions fréquentes

Le chouchou abîme-t-il les cheveux ?

Less than a fine elastic, with equal tightening, because it distributes the pressure over a larger surface. If it is tightened too much or always worn in the same place, it can still fatigue the hair.

Peut-on dormir avec un chouchou ?

Yes, provided it is not tightened too much. A loose braid or a low, soft ponytail pulls less on the hair at night than a high, tightly secured ponytail.

Quel chouchou choisir pour des cheveux fins ?

A smooth scrunchie, in satin or silk, slides over fine hair. Whatever the design, few turns and light tightening are just as important as the material.

Un chouchou crocheté se lave-t-il en machine ?

Not mine. Hand wash, at 30 °C maximum, then lay flat to dry. The machine would fatigue the elastic that is inside.
